Quiet

April 21, 2008

I went to pick Raine up at school.

Raine: Mommy, I want to hear you
Mommy: No.. go to the potty now.
Raine: I want to hear you.
Mommy: No I am not going to use my voice.
Raine: You're quiet.

Raine: You can't hear?
Daddy: No, daddy is deaf -- I can't hear
Raine: You quiet?
Daddy: Yes Raine, daddy is very quiet.
Raine: *nods* Daddy is quiet.

For a week now she has been asking either to hear someone talk, or asking if someone can hear. If the answer is no, then she will say "You're quiet." She also will say she doesn't hear and that she is quiet too. :)

And about 2 hours after our initial conversation on 4/23:

Raine: You can't hear?
Daddy: No...
Raine: *Nods* Daddy quiet.
Daddy: Can you hear?
Raine: No.
Daddy: Are you quiet?
Raine: Yes.

leave it to a child to remind us as to what the true meaning of life is. to just be, and to allow for others to just be, as well. to provide unconditional love and acceptance for who one is, and to trust that she, herself, has absolutely every right to expect the same in return. To ask questions not about life, but to ask about the wonders that Life itself provides.

my favorite poem, "the meaning of life" by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics
and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to leave the world a little better;
whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is the meaning of success."

Raine Holland, you are the epitome of this poem, and you have truly succeeded. Unconditionally yours, aunt stacy and uncle jody
